Supporting greater understanding of safety, housing and recovery
Domestic and family violence is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children in Australia. For many women escaping violence, finding safe and secure housing is the first critical step towards rebuilding a life free from fear.
Women’s Housing Company is proud to be part of the new Helping Hands Domestic Violence Education Study Guide, an important resource designed to build greater awareness and understanding of domestic violence, its impacts and the pathways available to support victim-survivors.
Developed alongside the Helping Hands television series, the study guide brings together stories, expert perspectives and educational resources to help individuals, workplaces, community groups and students better understand the realities of domestic violence and how we can all play a role in creating safer communities.
The Helping Hands series features Women’s Housing Company’s work supporting women affected by homelessness and domestic violence, highlighting the importance of access to secure housing and wraparound support. It also includes a panel discussion, featuring Partnerships and Impact Senior Manager, Libby Caskey, exploring the vital role of safe housing in helping victim-survivors move forward.
“Safe, affordable housing can be the difference between a woman remaining trapped in an unsafe situation and having the opportunity to rebuild her future,” says Libby. “Education and awareness are critical in helping communities understand the barriers women face and the support they need.”
The Helping Hands Domestic Violence Education Study Guide is now available as a free resource, providing an opportunity for more people to learn about domestic violence, challenge misconceptions and understand how we can contribute to meaningful change.
The Helping Hands episodes featuring Women’s Housing Company will air on 9Gem at 10:00am on Saturday 27 June, with an encore screening on Channel 9 at 5:30am on Sunday 28 June. Episodes will also be available on 9Now from Monday 29 June.
The Women’s Housing Company acknowledges the Gadigal people of the Eora nation as the traditional custodians of the land on which we operate, and pays respect to Elders both past and present.
